Getting married...

Hi, Mara here.
I am lucky to be engaged to a wonderful man who is not Latvian, but respects the importance of that piece of my heritage. He's made efforts to learn some of the language, though not formally. I know that spending time with my family speaking Latvian, making different food, and following different cultural mores can be a little bit overwhelming, especially when they are not particularly used to having an "outsider" in their circle who may not understand. I've met quite a few others who have been in the same situation, either as the wife/husband go between or the "outsider."
Any tips on sustaining a vibrant sense of culture in your relationship without ostracizing your partner?

On another note, we are both excited to inject Latvian elements in our wedding, i.e. micosana.
What have others done and how have you explained this to your non-Latvian/Baltic guests?
